Formulating Green
Annie L. Gariepy, Marketing Services Manager, Stepan Company
Industry has taken initiative to define “natural” and “organic” for personal care but there is no harmonization. Suppliers are therefore expected to be versed, participate as stakeholder or certify to one or all of the following: ECO-CERT, Natural Products Association, Oasis, USDA’s NOP and NSF. The biorenewable carbon index is one tool that may be used to answer customer/distributor questions. We offer a preview of our BCI and end use formulations with calculated BCI/green notes to audience.

Applying Cosmetic Technology to Certified Organic
Michael I. DeSantis, Arbor Organics, LLC
There remains a need for true “cosmetic grade” certified organic ingredients. Processes such as fermentation and encapsulation can be used to develop a range of value-added novel ingredients, which allow for brand differentiation in the organic market place.  Innovation in anti-microbials has permitted for the development of organic compliant systems. We have addressed the current state of the certified organic market and will provide methods in which cosmetic technologies such as biofermentation, delivery systems and preservation can be applied.

Sustainable Natural Preservation
Christopher Murphy, Technical Director, Active Micro Systems
Key areas of interest for sustainable natural products are product preservation and antimicrobial efficacy. The rise of plant cell culture work for the production of secondary metabolites is slowly making inroads into offsetting the need to directly harvest plants. However for the time being, bacterial fermentation as a source of antimicrobials remains the Industry standard. Experiments conducted using ferments of Leuconostoc sp. show promising results as a sustainable and organic compliant source of antimicrobials.

Daniel Nosé Sabara, Beraca
Creating a sustainable demand, multiple use of the Amazonian Biodiversity, local community empowerment, and preservation in numbers.
