ACS 38th Great Lakes Regional Meeting
The 38th Great Lakes Regional Meeting (GLRM) of the American Chemical Society, hosted by the Chicago Local Section, will be held May 13 - 16, 2009 at the Lincolnshire Marriott in Lincolnshire, IL. The theme for this meeting is “A Better Environment Through Chemistry” . The most up-to-date information on the meeting is available at the website, www.GLRM2009.org. Symposia planned for the meeting include sessions on:
Small chemical businesses Ethics in college education
Environmental chemistry and the Great Lakes Plant biochemistry
Proteomics Material-science and nanochemistry
Material science/polymer chemistry Food chemistry
Non-crystalline X-ray structural chemistry and the environment Chemical Education
Computational chemistry in the environment Medicinal chemistry
Issues and resources in chemical health and safety
A Gibbs Award symposium is planned, as well as general sessions in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and biochemistry. Furthermore, a poster session is also planned, in conjunction with the Exposition.
Planned workshops include a workshop dealing with small chemical businesses, a workshop on molecular simulation, a workshop on how to be a more effective chemical hygiene officer, a workshop on ethics and a workshop on careers. In addition, resumes will be reviewed. Other special events and programming are planned for high school teachers and women chemists.
An exposition will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2009 and Friday, May 15, 2009. Information on exhibitors who will be present is available on the website.
A number of awards will be presented at GLRM 2009 including the Industrial Innovation Award, the E. Ann Nalley Regional Award for Volunteer Service to the American Chemical Society, the Stanley C. Israel Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences, and the Regional High School Teachers Award. Nominations for these awards are due by March 1, 2009. The Lincolnshire Marriott is the home of an outstanding regional theatre. On Wednesday, May 13, the dinner theater presentation will be the play, “Spelling Bee”. GLRM attendees may sign up at an additional cost to join us for this delightful evening while registering to attend the conference.
Lincolnshire, IL is a suburb of Chicago and is within driving distance to Milwaukee. Both cities offer many additional activities including three professional baseball teams and a number of award-winning museums, theaters, zoos and galleries. Furthermore, there are a number of shopping opportunities, including a number of shopping outlets, as well as fine dining in the area.
