The Role of Cosmetics in Society
by Joseph Pavlichko,Croda Inc
Abstract: The history of cosmetic use is fascinating. References to “cosmetics”
in history can be cited as far back as the Egyptians around 10,000 BC in their use of the word
“cosmetae” to describe Roman slaves whose function was to bathe men and women in perfume. The
days of the early Greeks used the word “kosmein” which conveys the thought of, to decorate, to
care for, and to produce harmony between body and mind. Archeological finds have uncovered
early creams thought to be used to treat the skin from the wear and tear of the elements and
rugged life style of the period. As we entered the 20th century personal care product and
cosmetic use became more of the norm rather than the exception. Lifestyles changed, expendable
income increased, and the proliferation of media, especially movies and television, dramatically
impacted how we thought about ourselves and the cosmetic products we bought. Cosmetics have
played a major part of our lifestyle and contribute to our self image and how others perceive us.
The presentation will discuss the use of cosmetics thru history to present, the proliferation of
vanity in the 20th century, its influence on marketing and advertising, the pharmaceutical/cosmetic
connection, how cosmetics are used for social goodness and considerations for the future.
