Optimizing Foam and Mildness with Sultaines - Frank Wagner, Rhodia Inc.
Abstract
Sultaines, while not a new chemistry, offers an alternative to traditional systems or can be used to enhance an existing system. Recent work has shown that sultaines can tender some key foaming benefits as well as mildness to formulations.
In this presentation, we discuss several areas that are applicable to personal care formulations. This includes a brief history, the synthesis, common by-products, foaming/viscosity properties, mildness, regulatory and economics of the sultaine chemistry. Several surfactant combinations were studied, which included the effect of degrees of ethoxylation as well as the effect of pH on foaming and foam stability.
