BASIC FUNCTION:

Manage reformulation and develop formulation for products. This includes our four stores: food, over-the-counter drugs, personal care, and household products. Establish specifications and develop and conduct product testing to ensure the quality of the products. Provide support to manufacturing, marketing, and customer service regarding the product line.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A bachelors degree in pharmacy, chemistry, or another applicable field with minimum of three years laboratory experience. Demonstration of good lab technique is a must.
  2. Industrial formulation experience and familiar with USP, AOAC, AACC, ASTA, NF and FCC.
  3. Good interpersonal communications techniques in the English language are essential. Must have good organizational, data collection, record keeping and writing along with mathematical and computer skills.
  4. Confidentiality is a must.
  5. Be able to communicate tactfully with government agencies: local, state, and federal (FDA, OSHA, BATF, EPA, CPSC, HPB, etc.).
  6. Must be able to establish Material Safety Data Sheets and Good Manufacturing Practices for corporate use.
  7. Meticulous laboratory technique with the willingness to conform to laboratory practices of the company.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Food Chemist is responsible for the safe design of products consistent with their intended use and regulatory compliance.

Reformulate existing and develop formulation for new products. This includes food, over-the-counter drugs, personal care, and household products.

Revise and/or update specifications and product testing procedures as needed.

Establish and evaluate specifications and develop and conduct appropriate product testing to ensure the quality of the products.

Provide support to manufacturing, marketing and customer service regarding the product line.

Assist in the analysis of raw materials, finished purchased materials, and in-process and bulk materials for compliance with written specifications.

Record data in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Assist in GMP, OSHA, EPA, Health Canada and other regulatory compliance issues. Assist in the training of laboratory staff and other laboratory techniques. Assist in other areas as needed. Active training in Emergency Response Team (ERT).

ENVIRONMENT:

Watkins requests the employee’s consideration of not smoking in the workplace.

Temperatures in the laboratory are controlled while work in manufacturing areas may vary from as high as 100 degrees F in the summer to as low as 60 degrees F in the winter.

Noise levels, ingredient dust, and corrosives associated with analysis of materials requires the use of safety glasses, goggles, ear plugs, dust masks, protective gloves, and other PPE.

Adherence to strict personnel hygiene and work area sanitation promulgated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is required along with compliance with applicable regulations with regard to OSHA, EPA, HPB, and BATF in particular and others as indicated within Watkins Policies as written.

Upper manufacturing floors may be accessed by freight elevator or via narrow stairways. Emergency exits leading to adjacent buildings exist on the first floor and the core-manufacturing complex. Emergency egress above the fourth floor is only via stairway or fire escape accessed through doors and/ or windows.

FOOD SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

ALL PERSONNEL are responsible for disciplined adherence to those practices outlined in our Food Safety Manual. Additionally, it is everyone’s responsibility to report food safety problems to personnel with authority to initiate action by referring to the SQF Policy 4.1.3.1.

We are also accepting donations for door prizes for the after golf dinner.

Fee: Golfers $125.00 per player. This includes 5 1/2 hour 18-hole golfing with cart, Lunch Cookout, 2 hour free Open Bar and, after golf, Family style dinner with awards and prizes.

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists is a non-profit professional organization whose purpose is to promote the high standards of practice in cosmetic sciences and serve as a focus for the exchange of ideas and new developments in cosmetic research and technology.

Young Scientist Award Nominations are due July 1, 2012 to SCC National.

The Young Scientist Award is presented each year to recognize the outstanding achievements of new cosmetic scientists throughout the industry. This Award consists of a scroll, suitably inscribed, that can be presented annually to one scientist from each cosmetic manufacturer, supplier, or other organization in the cosmetics and personal products industries. The cost of this award is absorbed by the Society. Every manufacturer, supplier or other organization in the personal care industry may select an individual in their employ each year as a recipient of this award. The Managers to make the award recommendations. The criteria for selection is made by the individual company; however, the SCC requires the recipient be an active Member or National Affiliate of the Society for at least one year and working in the industry no more than 10 years. The recipient may only receive the Young Scientist Award once.

Recommendations should be submitted directly to the National Office of Society of Cosmetic Chemists, which shall verify the eligibility of the recipient. To request an application, contact Bill Cowen at the National Office.

The submission deadline is July 1st each year. After the Society has reviewed the eligibility of your nominee you will be notified of the Award and the scroll will be prepared for presentation according to your instructions. The awards may be presented at an SCC Chapter Meeting or through an internal corporate presentation. Recipient names are listed in the SCC Winter Newsletter.

About The Instructor

Tony O’Lenick is President of Siltech LLC., located in Lawrenceville, Ga. Siltech LLC., is a silicone specialty company. Prior to that he held technical and executive positions at Henkel Corporation and Mona Industries. He has been involved in the personal care market for over 30 years. Tony has published over 25 technical articles in trade journals, written six books, and is the inventor on over 300 patents. He received a number of awards for work in silicone chemistry including the 1996 Samuel Rosen Award given by the American Oil Chemists’ Society, the 1997 Innovative Use of Fatty Acids Award given by the Soap and Detergents Association, and the Partnership to The Personal Care Award given by the Advanced Technology Group. Tony has been a member of the Committee on Scientific Affairs and the Education committee of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is currently National Treasurer.

This position will conduct research, analysis, formulation and experimentation on new and existing products. R&D Scientists support the requirements of the Sales Department and work closely with team members to bring products to market.

Essential Duties:

  • Formulate new product and reformulate existing products based upon benchmark prototypes, product development profiles, marketing direction, and innovative formulation ideas.
  • Troubleshoot and problem-solve unresolved or new formula issues.
  • Conduct research and analysis activities according to applicable government regulations, manufacturing processes, or other considerations.
  • Create final ingredient lists and documents needed for finished product release
  • Create prototypes and product samples as needed.
  • Perform formulation, physical and analytical testing as appropriate.
  • Review research, testing, quality control, and other operational reports to ensure that quality standards efficiency, and schedules are met by our selected packager.
  • Plan and perform bench experiments in support of development projects.
  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic records.
  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvements in practices and systems to improve performance and enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Participate in scale-up pilot batches and initial production run batches.
  • Stay current with the latest technology, actives, and delivery systems.
  • Advise and assists in obtaining patents for products, processes, or equipment.
  • Interface with manufacturing/production/QC, purchasing, sales and marketing teams.
  • Communicate with outside vendors and laboratories.
  • Provide technical assistance/support for other departments as needed.
  • Supervise and maintain laboratory work area in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Assure that laboratory equipment receives appropriate maintenance and calibration in accordance with a standard schedule.
  • Communicate essential information to the employees within the department and/or within the company.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Chemistry, Biology from a 4-year college or university; and/or 5 plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to create, maintain, and read computer generated files such as formulas, procedures, specifications, and ingredient label format.
  • Ability to generate reporting from electronic data.
  • Ability to match colors so color matching can be learned and mastered for product formulation.
  • Ability and desire to work with, smell and learn about fragrances.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
